HSRPs are now mandatory across multiple states in India, including Maharashtra, following the amendments to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The older vehicle number plates were prone to tampering, making it difficult for traffic police to effectively monitor vehicles and prevent their involvement in illegal activities.

However, with the introduction of HSRPs, this issue has been significantly mitigated. Here’s what you need to know about HSRPs in Maharashtra:

• Security Features: HSRPs come equipped with chromium-based holograms that make them tamper-proof and prevent duplication. The plates are installed using strong, non-removable screws with snap-on locks, further enhancing vehicle security.

• Permanent Identification: Each HSRP is laser-branded with a permanent identification number, reducing the chances of tampering and enabling faster identification.

• Mandatory Compliance: All vehicles registered before April 2019 are required by law to have HSRPs in Maharashtra. Failure to comply can result in a fine of ₹1,000.

– Color-Coded Stickers: HSRPs must include color-coded stickers that indicate the vehicle’s fuel type, as mandated by law.

How to Apply for HSRP in Maharashtra

For vehicles purchased after April 2019, HSRPs are pre-installed. However, if you own an older vehicle, you can apply for an HSRP either online or offline.

Offline Application Process:

To apply for an HSRP offline, visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in your area. Request an application form for the HSRP, fill in the necessary details, attach any required documents, and submit the form along with the payment.
